Soup Kitchen

In the next building to our apartment there is a soup kitchen and thrift shop.  The building belongs to the church. 2 or 3 days a week we help at the soup kitchen which was initiated by the church but now is a separate charity. 70 to 100 lunches are prepared and served mostly to Inuit folks. At the weekend the people get a 4 course meal prepared by chefs who work in the town.  It is remarkable in many ways. All kinds of people volunteer. There is a guy who has alcohol problems but is very intelligent, having lived in many countries and who speaks 5 languages but finds it hard to hold down a job. There was a blind man who made scones and there is us! The meals at the moment are being paid for during Ramadan by Islamic Relief Canada, enough money for 100 meals for 40 days.

We say Grace before eating, very respectfully, and most people make a point of saying thank you. They greet us when we see them while walking around town.

Certainly feels like something God is pleased with even if it breaks all our conventions! Poor people are cared for and others in volunteering feel a sense of worth.
